Disposal and Decommissioning Services

Central Van Lines provides disposal and decommissioning services for businesses closing, downsizing, or vacating office and commercial space. We handle the full scope of space turnover - from planning what stays and what goes to removing surplus furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Every item is sorted for resale, donation, recycling, or disposal based on what makes the most economic and environmental sense. Whether you are moving to a new location, consolidating offices, or switching to a remote workplace, we help you meet your lease return conditions on time and reduce the cost of clearing out your old space.

What we handle during decommissioning

Our movers work through every step of decommissioning your space so you can focus on what comes next. That includes:

  • Inventorying all furniture, fixtures, and equipment before anything is moved
  • Disconnecting and removing workstations, cubicles, and modular furniture
  • Removing confidential data and the hardware that stores it
  • Sorting surplus assets into categories - resale, donation, recycling, or disposal
  • Coordinating pickups with certified recycling and donation partners
  • Cleaning and preparing the space to meet lease return requirements
  • Loading and transporting anything moving to your new location

Every item is accounted for. Nothing is left behind, and nothing goes to a landfill that could be resold, donated, or recycled instead.

HOW IT WORKS

How our decommissioning process works

1

Site assessment.

We walk the space with you to understand the scope - how many floors, how much furniture, what equipment is staying, what is going, and when the space needs to be turned over.

2

Asset plan

We build an item-by-item plan that assigns every piece of furniture, fixture, and equipment to one of four paths - resale, donation, recycling, or disposal.

3

Removal and sorting.

Our movers disassemble, remove, and sort everything on schedule. Confidential data and the hardware that stores it are separated and handled according to your data destruction requirements. Resale items are staged for pickup, donation items go to verified nonprofit partners, and recyclable materials go to certified facilities.

4

Space turnover

We clean and clear the space to meet the return conditions in your lease, so you avoid penalties and get your deposit back on time.

When businesses need decommissioning services

Decommissioning is not just about clearing furniture out of a room. It is a planned process that applies whenever a business is changing its physical footprint. Common situations include:

Office relocation

You are moving to a new space and need the old one emptied, cleaned, and returned to the landlord by a specific date.

Downsizing

Your company is reducing its footprint and needs to get rid of surplus desks, chairs, filing cabinets, and equipment that will not fit in the smaller space.

Lease expiration

Your lease is ending and the return clause requires you to leave the space in a specific condition. Missing that deadline can mean penalties.

Switching to remote work

You no longer need a physical office and need to liquidate everything inside it.

Merger or acquisition

Two offices are becoming one, and the duplicate furniture and equipment from the closing location needs to be removed.

In every case, the earlier you start planning, the more options you have for reselling or donating surplus assets instead of paying to dispose of them.

Why businesses choose Central Van Lines for decommissioning

Central Van Lines has handled commercial moves, office relocations, and space turnovers across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio since 1997. Decommissioning is a natural extension of the commercial moving work we already do every week.

We bring our own trucks, movers, and equipment. We coordinate directly with recycling facilities, donation organizations, and disposal vendors so you do not have to manage multiple contractors. One company handles the full process from the first walkthrough to final broom sweep.

Our movers are trained to work in occupied buildings, handle freight elevators, protect flooring and walls during removal, and meet building management requirements for move-out scheduling. If you need temporary storage between your move-out and move-in dates, we handle that too.

FAQ

FAQs - Disposal and decommissioning services

What happens to furniture and equipment that still has value?

We sort every item before removal. Desks, chairs, conference tables, and other furniture in good condition are flagged for resale or donation. We coordinate with buyers and nonprofit organizations to place those items. You receive a summary of what was resold, donated, recycled, and disposed of.

How do you handle confidential data during decommissioning?

We identify all hardware that stores data - hard drives, servers, copiers with internal storage, and similar equipment. Those items are separated and handled according to your company's data destruction policy. If you need certified destruction, we coordinate with a certified vendor.

How far in advance should we schedule decommissioning?

As early as possible. Most businesses start planning 30 to 60 days before their lease turnover date. The earlier you start, the more time there is to find resale or donation options for surplus assets instead of paying for disposal.

Can you decommission a space while the rest of the building is still occupied?

Yes. Our movers are experienced in working inside occupied commercial buildings. We follow building management rules for elevator use, loading dock scheduling, and floor protection. We can work during evenings or weekends if the building requires it.

Do you handle recycling of electronics and office equipment?

Yes. We separate recyclable materials - metals, plastics, electronics, and e-waste - and deliver them to certified recycling facilities. This reduces what goes to landfill and can lower your total disposal cost.

What does a decommissioning project typically include?

It depends on the space, but a standard project includes a site walkthrough, an asset plan, hardware and data removal, furniture disassembly and removal, sorting for resale or donation or recycling or disposal, and a final clean to meet lease return conditions.
